Dos and don'ts

Get the details
Find out all you can about the interviewer and the media outlet you're being interviewed for - including the topic, if others are also being interviewed and the anticipated audience.

Never risk an interview unprepared
Make sure you research so you can anticipate potential questions — and prepare three or four statements you can make when appropriate. Work hard to ensure your answers sound fresh.

Paint pictures
When describing something, try and illustrate your point in a way an audience can visualise. A distance isn't 210 metres, it's the length of two football pitches.

Be jargon free
Picture your audience as intelligent but non-expert; don't patronise but don't assume specialist knowledge.

Don't dodge questions
Never attempt to answer the question you wish you'd been asked. Practice anticipated questions and prepare strong answers. If you get asked a question you didn't expect, answer as fully as you can without attempt to evade it.

Don't let your eyes wander
Maintaining eye contact is vital. Allowing your eyes to wander can make you look insincere. Hold the attention of the person you're speaking to and you'll come across much better. Look your interviewer right in the eyes, don't look into the camera unless it's 'down the line' interview.
