It’s an old maxim but like so many of them, it has a ring of truth about it: “fail to prepare, prepare to fail.”
That’s why we believe media management should be considered an essential part of any senior management training. Day to day tasks such as people management, financial skills and actually running a business are learnt over time – and one of the reasons why you’ve reached the senior position you now enjoy is because you’ve excelled at them.
But dealing with the press? That tends to be the preserve of the senior manager, it isn’t a skill where you’ve had time to learn, adapt and practice as you’ve moved through the ranks. One day it’s not your responsibility, the next it is.
